    Before his career as an attorney, Steve held a variety of jobs including sawyer, printer’s devil, feed mill and grain elevator construction laborer, and carpenter. Steve has been a lawyer since 1987. He is admitted in both state and federal courts in Maine and Massachusetts and the First Circuit Court of Appeals.

    Steve graduated from Northeastern University School of Law in 1987. His undergraduate degree is in Legal Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Upon graduating, Steve spent two years as a Law Clerk to the Justices of the Massachusetts Superior Court and a one-year clerkship with Federal Judge-Magistrate Edward Keith at the United States District Court in Bangor. Steve then worked for an insurance defense law firm in Portland, followed by four years as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Maine. He then returned to private practice focusing on administrative law, appellate practice and civil rights actions. Prior to joining Irwin, Tardy & Morris, Steve was the Director of the Policy and Performance Division of Maine’s Medicaid program.

    Over Steve’s 25 years as an attorney he has both successfully defended and pursued claims on a variety of legal issues. Steve successfully: defended the State of Maine against a Medicaid federal class action suit; defeated an unconstitutional town ordinance; defended and pursued anti-trust suits; and was successful in numerous civil rights lawsuits. Recently, Steve successfully defended a federal court jury award of $1.1 million dollars in punitive damages.
